How it can be done - evolution to
Web Services
There are a number of different approaches to e-commerce syndication, ranging from ground-up development of separate e-commerce systems to various tagging techniques including RMI (remote method invocation), more recent XML tagging methods, and the publish-subscribe approach of web services. New approaches will also be developed over time.
Web services are changing software development. Built upon an emerging set of
standards, Web services are software components, often reusable, that can deliver
and/or access across the Internet to interact automatically with other software
components, the results which is reduced integration time, improved interactivity
and greater productivity for lower costs. Web services will provide enterprises
with increased interconnectivity between applications and devices, as well as
superior collaboration among trading partners and customers.
IDC estimates that Web services will comprise a market valued at greater than $30 billion in software, services and hardware by 2007. IDC defines Web services as follows:
Web services are Internet technology based “machine to machine services” that are based on a standardized approach to dynamic component connectivity and interoperability that relies on self-describing components that interoperate at run time and open connectivity standards including Internet Protocol (IP), simple object access protocol (SOAP), and web services description language (WSDL).
The emergence of these standards allows web services objects to interoperate across platforms, permitting code to travel between and among different devices and operating environments. Increased interoperability has enabled powerful new Internet applications such as syndicated e-commerce to be developed easier and more efficiently. As a result, today retail products such as books, consumer electronics, toys, software and services such as hotel, rental cars and airline reservations are being offered utilizing the syndicated e-commerce business model. DDR Holdings, LLC has identified a large and significant number of these syndicated e-commerce offerings and the intermediaries providing the service representing a significant and growing license opportunity for the Company.
